I’ve been working with beautiful gemstones, handmade lampwork glass and Czech crystals to create attention grabbing necklaces and earrings.

The key to designing a beautiful necklace is to have balance in both colour and form. So when you are looking at a gemstone necklace make sure you look at the placement of the stones as well as the colours and how they balance.

I’ve been wondering how many times can I give my jewelry and other creations as presents to friends and family before it is all too predictable and boring for them?

You know how it goes, they say they love what you’re doing and buy things from you but do they really want them as presents from you and how often is too often?

A girl friend of mine is building a business design too and is careful with her money – it all goes into the business as it does for all of us – and we have it agreed between us to token presents and trades. She is great at massage and I’m good with business things so we give each other a token gift and an hour of our time (I get massages which I think is to my advantage!).

So do I have to have all these sorts of conversations with my other friends too? What do you do?

I love the philosophy behind it where nine businesses and groups got together to form The Handmade Consortium to encourage people to buy handmade for Christmas presents this year (and the others to come).
