Making to Inspire

When you’re making something regularly do you find it useful to create in a different medium to refresh the creative spirit?

I love photography, quilting and sewing, drawing and painting and find this helps with my creative business (jewelry) but it wasn’t until a friend pointed it out as something blindingly obvious did I think about it.

I know working with color in my drawings directly inspires my jewelry designs but I hadn’t figured the others to be connected. But it is all about feeding the creative spirit, letting inspiration well and reconnecting with the designer inside.

Wild Inspiration

I watch a great wildlife documentary dvd last night and found it so inspiring – the animals and plant life itself but also the camera work, the composition with the frames, the images and the sheer colors.

The movement of the animals in full action is still with me and I want to include the ideas in some sort of creative work – what exactly I don’t know yet but I’ll get there.

Living with animals is always a great source of joy and happiness (I think my cat is one of the funniest creatures on earth but I’m sure we all think that about our favorite animals!) but this BBC documentary last night has just got me seeing with new eyes. I love being inspired!

Inspiration from Crafts and Arts

I’ve been working in some different mediums lately – namely pastels and pencils – and I’m finding it is influencing my work (jewelry design).
This regularly happens when I make time for doing something else creative, another craft, working with color etc but I seem to forget between projects and let too much time pass between projects.

It does still amaze me how doing different crafts and works brings out a new phase of inspiration and creativity, especially when returning to your normal craft or art.

Inspiring Women For Every Day of the Year

Last year was a bit of a preparation year and this year feels like it will be one where I take off and really make things happen. So to help it all along I’ve been really thoughtful about what I’m bringing into my life this year and it seems to be having an effect.

I use my diary every day so I’ve chosen a week to a page one that has stories of achieving women over the centuries. There’s one main woman featured per week and every day has a little comment along the lines of in this day in such a such year this woman did this. I figured if reading about other women achieving their thing didn’t inspire me through out the year then I would need to radically change my sense of perspective!

So far it is working perfectly to plan. I’m even looking forward to turning the page each week (I’m not reading ahead so I give myself weekly rewards with these stories of creative and amazing women).

I wished I figured this one out before. It seems lots of people carefully pick their diaries for all sorts of reasons – inspiration especially. What’s your favorite (inspiring) diary you’ve had?
